The Pythagorean system assigns values A=1 through Z=8 in repeating 9-unit cycles, making it the most systematic and widely taught approach. The Chaldean system, considered the oldest (originating in ancient Babylon), assigns values based on vibrational energy rather than alphabetical position and never assigns 9 to a single letter, considering 9 sacred.
