Carriers charge based on whichever is greater: the actual physical weight or the volumetric weight — which reflects how much space a package occupies in the carrier's vehicle or aircraft. Understanding this calculation is essential for anyone who ships packages regularly and wants to avoid unexpected costs.
The formula is straightforward: Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ Divisor. The most common divisor used by Turkish domestic carriers (Yurtiçi Kargo, Aras Kargo, MNG Kargo, PTT Kargo) is 3,000. For international air freight, airlines and express couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS) typically use 5,000 or 6,000. This difference can be significant: a lightweight but bulky package like a pillow might physically weigh 0.5 kg but have a volumetric weight of 3 kg, meaning you'd pay for 3 kg.
