Area & Volume Calculator

The area and volume calculator covers the complete set of geometric shapes encountered in education, construction, architecture, and everyday problem-solving. The 2D tab handles nine planar shapes — from the simplicity of squares (A = a²) to the elegance of hexagons (A = (3√3/2)a²). The 3D tab handles seven solid shapes, including the often-overlooked frustum (truncated cone) used in everything from buckets to cooling towers.

Each calculation uses the exact mathematical formula with no approximations beyond floating-point precision. The ellipse perimeter uses the Ramanujan approximation (P ≈ 2π√((a²+b²)/2)), which is accurate to within 0.1% for typical aspect ratios. All results are displayed with 4 decimal places and include the formula used, making this a useful study tool as well as a practical calculator.

The unit selector supports mm, cm, m, km in metric mode and in, ft, yd, mi in imperial mode. Area results automatically square the unit (m → m²) and volume results cube it (m → m³), preventing common unit-confusion errors. Use alongside our Unit Converter for unit conversions between systems.
