Two successive discounts of 20% and 30% are NOT equal to 50%. The actual total discount is 44%.

The Discount Calculator computes the sale price, savings amount and final cost after applying one or two successive discounts to any original price. Retailers, shoppers, freelancers and finance professionals use discount calculations daily — for pricing products, evaluating promotions, calculating client discounts and understanding the real value of sale offers. Enter the original price and discount percentage to instantly see how much you save and what you pay.

Successive discounts do not add up directly: a 20 percent discount followed by a further 10 percent is not equivalent to a 30 percent discount. The correct calculation: 1,000 minus 20 percent equals 800; 800 minus 10 percent equals 720. A single 30 percent discount on 1,000 would give 700 — a 20 difference. Retailers exploit this mathematical fact in promotional language, presenting "20 percent off plus an extra 10 percent" as more attractive than its actual 28 percent combined discount rate (calculated as 100 minus (0.80 x 0.90) x 100). Our calculator shows the exact final price for both single and double discount scenarios.

For freelancers offering client discounts, even a 10 percent reduction on a 5,000 project costs 500 — a day or more of your working time. Price discounts should be reserved for strategic purposes: closing delayed deals, rewarding loyal clients or clearing excess inventory.
